Chiang Saen Entry Requirements

Chiang Saen Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed June 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Chiang Saen, the historic gateway on the Mekong River in northern Thailand, welcomes visitors through its small land-border checkpoint and nearby Chiang Rai International Airport. Most travelers enter Thailand visa-free for tourism, receiving a stamp-on-arrival that allows stays of 30 or 60 days depending on nationality. The immigration process is straightforward: present a passport valid for at least six months, return/onward ticket, and proof of funds; fingerprints and a photo are taken electronically. Because Chiang Saen sits in the Golden Triangle, many visitors combine it with overland crossings to/from Laos or Myanmar. If you plan to stay in Chiang Saen hotels before continuing to Laos, make sure you receive a Thai exit stamp when you leave and re-enter Thailand later—double-entry visas or multiple-entry tourist visas may be required. Arrive with printed proof of accommodation (many Chiang Saen hotels provide instant confirmation emails) and carry cash or a card showing you can support yourself; immigration officers occasionally ask for this when travelers enter by land.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Thailand’s visa policy applies uniformly to Chiang Saen Checkpoint. Tourists are sorted into three main groups: visa-exempt, visa-on-arrival/eVOA, and those who must obtain a visa in advance.

Visa-Free Entry
60 days (extendable once for 30 more days inside Thailand)

Passport holders of 64 countries may enter Thailand at Chiang Saen without a visa for tourism.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Germany France Netherlands Italy Spain Sweden Norway Denmark Finland Japan South Korea Singapore Malaysia Brunei

Entry by land border is limited to two crossings per calendar year; air arrivals are not counted toward the land-border quota.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
15 days (eVOA) or 60 days (tourist e-Visa)

eVOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) or e-Visa must be approved online before arrival for certain nationalities.

Includes
China India Russia Ukraine Saudi Arabia Taiwan Bulgaria Cyprus Malta Romania Uzbekistan Kazakhstan Mongolia Mexico
How to Apply: Apply at https://thailandevoa.vfsevisa.com (eVOA) or https://www.thaievisa.go.th (e-Visa). Processing 1-3 working days; upload passport bio page, photo, flight, hotel, and pay online.
Cost: eVOA: 2,000 THB; e-Visa: ~$40 USD depending on nationality

Print the approval letter; Chiang Saen immigration accepts both eVOA and e-Visa print-outs. eVOA queue is usually faster than visa-on-arrival counters.

Visa Required
Single-entry tourist visa: 60 days (extendable 30 days); Multiple-entry: 6 months, 60 days per visit

Citizens of countries not eligible for visa exemption or eVOA must secure a tourist visa at a Thai embassy/consulate before travel.

How to Apply: Apply online (Thai e-Visa portal) or in person at nearest Thai embassy; provide passport, photo, bank statement, itinerary, accommodation (Chiang Saen hotels booking accepted). Processing 3-5 working days.

Proof of accommodation for first night (hotel voucher) is mandatory; a refundable cash bond may be requested for some nationalities.

Arrival Process

Chiang Saen Border Checkpoint is open daily 06:00–22:00. Expect modest facilities—one joint Thai-Lao building—so have exact documents ready.

1
Arrival & Health Screening
Walk to the Thai immigration booth; officers may check temperature or ask about recent illnesses (no COVID test as of June 2024).
2
Document Review
Hand over passport, arrival card (TM6), and printed eVOA/e-Visa if applicable. Officer scans passport, takes photo and fingerprints.
3
Stamp & Entry
Receive entry stamp with admitted-until date; check the date before leaving the counter. Proceed to customs green/red channel if carrying dutiable goods.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid ≥6 months and have at least one blank page.
TM6 Arrival/Departure Card
Distributed on the bus/boat or at the gate; fill both sides before queueing.
Proof of Accommodation
Print-out of Chiang Saen hotel booking or address of guesthouse.
Onward/Return Ticket
Often requested for land-border entries to confirm you will leave Thailand.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Carry a pen on the Mekong boat to complete the TM6 card before docking; lines form quickly.
Have 20,000 THB (or equivalent) in cash per person or proof of bank balance—officials rarely ask but can.
If you plan to exit to Laos the same day, ask immigration for a ‘same-day re-entry stamp’ to avoid using two entries.

Customs & Duty-Free

Thailand gives generous duty-free allowances, but the Golden Triangle is closely watched for drugs and antiques. Declare anything questionable.

Alcohol
1 litre of wine or spirits
Must be ≥18 years old; amounts above 1L subject to 60% duty + VAT.
Tobacco

Extra quantities taxed heavily; e-cigarettes and vaping liquid are illegal—confiscation + fine possible.

USD 20,000 or equivalent must be declared when bringing in or taking out.
Declaration form (Tor Mor 2) available at the red channel.
Gifts/Goods
Total value up to THB 20,000 per person (THB 10,000 if arriving by land)
Items for commercial use are dutiable regardless of value.

Traveling with Children

Children need their own passports. If only one parent is present, carry notarized consent letter from the absent parent plus child’s birth certificate to prevent child-trafficking questions.

Traveling with Pets

Dogs/cats need an import permit (Form R. 1/1) obtained in advance from the Department of Livestock Development, rabies vaccination ≥21 days before travel, and health certificate issued within 3 days of arrival. Entry is allowed only at designated checkpoints—contact Chiang Saen Animal Quarantine Station 24 h in advance.

Extended Stays

Extend a 60-day tourist stamp for 30 more days at Chiang Rai Immigration (1,900 THB). For longer stays apply for a Non-Immigrant O (volunteer, retirement, etc.) at the Chiang Rai office before the initial permission expires.
